Social drinks

The last Tuesday of the month has become a bit of a tradition when people from the club can meet up in an evening and sample the delightful offerings of a local establishment. It's a great opportunity to catch up with fellow members away from the rush of the breakfast meetings, or to bring along the odd colleague or friend to introduce them to the club.

August's drinks will be in The Canteen, Stokes Croft from about 7pm onwards. We hope to see many of you there!

Canoe tour on the River Wye

For all you "sporty" people, this is your chance to get involved in an active day out, get back to nature and on to the water!

We will leave Bristol about 9ish in the morning, and after about an hour's drive we'll arrive at Ross on Wye, where the tour operator will drop us off in the water at about 10.30am. We will then start paddling with the flow of the river down to Symonds Yat, a lovely nature experience as you'll get to see the amazing river banks of the Wye! You'll also pass beautiful Goodrich Castle and picturesque streches of water and countryside, with the river twisting and turning at a leasurely pace around hills and woods. If we're lucky, we'll even see deer!

The whole tour is 14 miles (but with the flow of the river!), which will be approximately 5 hours in the boat in total during the day. We will stop in between for picnic and pub stops, so there will be plenty of chance to fuel up!

There are canoes available for 2 people (£30 a day for the boat, i.e. £15 per person) or 3 people (£35, i.e. 11.67 per person), but a canoe can only carry 35 stone maximum, so please factor that in!

There will also be drop-off charges (basically the transport of the canoes by the tour operator), parking and fuel costs (to get there) involved, so please assume that the whole cost for the day trip will be an estimated £20 to £25 pounds per person. We are thinking of having a picnic for lunch at the riverbank at one of the little beaches, so extra costs for food and drinks will be within your control. Please refer to the tour operator's homepage at CanoeHire.com for further details, safety issues etc.

We are currently trying to sort out numbers so that we can finalise our booking, so please let our Social Secretary know if you would like to come along. Closer to the day, we will organise car sharing among us, so that we can get to Ross on Wye in the most cost efficient way and give lifts to people without cars. Please feel free to bring along partners and friends, as it promises to be a lovely day out!

Tuesday 28 September 2010

Social drinks

As usual, for the last Tuesday of the month, we are planning to meet up at a local public house, for a few drinks, laughs and stories. The venue is yet to be confirmed for September, but the details will be posted here soon.

Wednesday 29 September 2010

Dinner and tour at Berkeley Castle

Our parent club, Bristol Breakfast, kindly invites us (including partners) along to an exciting visit to Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire. The Castle has been lived in by the same family for over 900 years and it is a place of amazing history - where Edward II was murdered, the Barons of the West gathered before Magna Carta and where Queen Elizabeth I hunted and played bowls!

The evening will pan out something like this:

The evening meal will offer a choice of Estate venison sausages + creamy mash, peas, carrots & gravy or Fresh salad with ham or cheddar cheese or vegetable flan. There will also be a choice of 3 deserts with clotted cream or ice cream.

The cost is £25 per person, and spaces are allocated on a first come first served basis, so please contact our Social Secretary as soon as possible if you would like to come along.

A trip to the Old Vic

As part of our quest to get to know hidden gems of Bristol, we are planning a visit to the Bristol Old Vic, starting with a guided backstage tour, followed by a light lunch and a play.

The theatre is opening the doors on 250 years of theatrical history! Join us for a tour of the oldest continuously working theatre in the country and explore the backstage areas and hidden corridors that have played host to the biggest names in British theatre. Step through time with expert guides who will reveal an intimate portrait of a building whose story is as gripping and tempestuous as any that has been performed within its walls.

The programme for the day is as follows:

The tour and lunch is available for £10 per person if we are a minimun of 10 people. Ticket prices for the play vary and can be individually booked. Please check the seating plan on the Old Vic website where you would prefer to sit and then let our Social Secretary know. Natalie can then book our tickets as a group and obtain a 10% discount for everybody.

As ever, friends and family are welcome to come along, and get in touch with our Social Secretary if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you there!
