Past Events from 2010

We are only part way through this year, but there have already been so many events that we've all enjoyed. Check out our upcoming events page to find out what else we have in the pipeline.

Gliding with the Bristol & Gloucestershire Gliding Club

The Rotary Club of Bristol Breakfast organised an evening of "try-glides" with the local gliding club, and invited some intrepid BBRC members along. Here is how Kevin summed up his experiences:

“The Bristol & Gloucestershire Gliding club (BGGC) really took care of us to deliver an experience which was both scary and exhilarating! Richard’s reassuring words as we waited our turn were priceless. The references to previous gliding disasters and what might potentially go wrong put everything into perspective for me.“

“What was most memorable about the whole experience was how the colour slowly drained from Ryan’s face the closer he got to take off... It was so reassuring to know that someone else was more nervous than myself. My Experience Summary:

Summer BBQ / Second birthday party

The Rotary year runs from 1 July to 30 June, when the committee roles are handed over to a fresh-faced new bunch. It's always a cause for celebration, and what better way to have fun in the summer than by organising a BBQ.

This family-friendly event took place at Racks in Clifton, and a fantastic time was had by all!

Friday - Saturday 9 - 10 July 2010

South Cotswold Beer Festival

Yate Rotary Club's main annual fundraising event is the South Cotswold Beer Festival which usually takes place at Chipping Sodbury Rugby Ground.

Following the popularity of this event with BBRC members in the past two years, we were again asked for volunteers for the Saturday to help serve the beers/ciders/wine, and the club didn't let Yate down! All helpers had a great time serving the hundreds of real ales, ciders and perrys, puctuated by the odd break to dance around the field to the fantastic live music on show.

We anticipate that we will be asked to help out again next year, so if you missed out this year, look out for our club e-mails seeking volunteers in the Spring of 2011!

Sunday 13 June 2010

Dragon Boat Festival

The annual dragon boat festival has become a great club tradition. We always take part, not so much for the chance to show off our superior paddling skills, but so that we can all get dressed up in silly costumes! For the third year in a row, our team won the best dressed team prize, this year for our theme of Noah's Ark and his pairs of animals! We also used this opportunity to raise funds for the Bristol branch of Macmillan Cancer Care. Once all the money has been collected, we'll update the site with the grand total.

Charity Quiz

After the incredible success of our first ever charity quiz in 2009, when we raised over £1,200, we were determined to organise another quiz. This time, it was in aid of the Royal National Institute for the Blind. We are aiming to raise funds for the cost of converting a book to braille.

The event took place at the glamorous Radisson Blu hotel. It was a fun packed quiz with an excellent fine food buffet and two free drinks as well as some wonderful prizes. A brilliant time was had by all, and we are still busy totting up the income from the night!

Bath v Harlequins Rugby

Our lovely secretary Matt is a keen rugby fan and was quite happy to arrange the purchasing of tickets for this match. A few of us turned up on the day and had great fun watching the match, as well as partaking in a post-match drink or two...

Curry Night

A night out for a good curry has become a bit of a club tradition. It's always a great chance to catch up with people, and introduce friends or visitors to the club. Last year, we took out some Brazilian students who were visiting our Rotary District on their Group Study Exchange. There is nothing like a great curry to demonstrate British culture!

This year, our GSE visitors were from Italy and we went to the Thali Cafe in Clifton. For those of you not familiar with a Thali, it is an Indian meal comprising "a carefully spiced and vibrantly presented selection of freshly prepared dishes served on a metal Thali plate". Not only was the food delicious but it is also very reasonably priced, at £6.95. The evening was made all the more special, as it was the birthday of one of our visitors. Needless to say, we all celebrated in true British style with a quick post-dinner visit to the pub!

Saturday 13 March 2010

Tea & cake "Above & Beyond" open day

Our very own Mr Ryan James invited everyone for tea and cake at his house on Saturday 13th March between 11am and 3pm. All tea, cake and coffee was available for a nominal price that covered the cost, plus raised extra money Above & Beyond charities. Consider it like a ‘drop in’ social... nothing formal, just tea, cake, coffee, old school games and good conversation with friends and folk you may like to know!

Wednesday 3 March 2010

After work drinks at The Spotted Cow

Our March after work drinks were in The Spotted Cow on North Street in Bedminster. We met, as usual, from 7:30 onwards. As ever, friends and colleagues were very much welcome and a great time was had by all.

Saturday 27 February 2010

"End Polio Now" bucket collections at Tesco

Rotary was given permission by Tesco to carry out bucket collections for the End Polio Now campaign on Saturday 27th February. Volunteers went along to designated Tesco stores in Bristol and rattled buckets to help the Rotary Clubs of Bristol to raise the as much money as possible for this amazing cause.

Thursday 25 February 2010

Fashion show and Clarins beauty event

This event was definitely one for our founder president given his penchant for Clarins, however obviously it was open to all. Taking place in Café Zest in House of Fraser, guests were treated to a fashion show and pampering from Clarins whilst enjoying a glass of wine and nibbles.

Bristol Savages and Young Musician of the Year Concert

This concert was the first time that Bristol Savages, a club within Bristol for more than 110 years, performed outside of their own environment and it was one of the very rare public performances they have ever given. The evening consisted of a range of entertainment including two performances from performers from the Young Musician of the Year. The show took place at St George's from 7:30pm.
